Restorative Dentistry

A Completely Beautiful, Healthy Smile

Restorative Dentistry

At the dental practice of Dr. Ettienne van Zyl, we believe that the health and beauty of the smile go hand-in-hand. Just as cosmetic issues can negatively affect one’s self-esteem, poor oral health can affect one’s overall quality of life. Missing, damaged, or badly decayed teeth can cause pain and discomfort, as well as difficulty eating and speaking. Fortunately, with the help of restorative dentistry procedures, Memphis area patients can rebuild their smiles so that they are just like new again.

Dr. van Zyl has a wealth of experience administering procedures that improve the health, strength, and functionality of the teeth. He can accurately diagnose problems, and recommend the best course of treatment for reaching optimal oral health. We want everyone to enjoy a lifetime of healthy smiles. If you have neglected your smile, there is no better time than now to seek treatment, so issues do not worsen. Missing teeth is a problem that should not be left untreated. Poor oral hygiene is the most common cause of tooth loss, which is why brushing, flossing, routine dental visits, and preventive measures are imperative. However, when tooth loss does occur, Dr. van Zyl typically recommends dental implants for patients. These titanium posts are surgically placed into the jaw to function as an artificial tooth root. Over time, the implant fuses with the surrounding bone, becoming a permanent fixture in the mouth. Then, a natural-looking prosthetic tooth is attached to the post, filling the open space. The artificial root and tooth look, function, and feel remarkably natural.

We offer complete and partial dentures to help restore a patient's smile after experiencing significant tooth loss. Dr. van Zyl works with patients to identify the type of denture that will best meet their needs. Your traditional or implant-supported prosthesis will be custom crafted to match your surrounding teeth for a beautiful and natural-looking smile. In the past, dentures were often uncomfortable and tended to shift around in the mouth. However, advancements in dental technology and materials have allowed dentures to more accurately mimic the look, feel, and functionality of the natural teeth.

Individuals with considerable oral health issues may require full-mouth reconstruction. During this process, Dr. van Zyl evaluates the condition of the patient’s teeth and gums, and develops a treatment plan consisting of a combination of procedures. Restorative treatments, such as dental crowns and dental bridges, may be administered to repair badly damaged or decayed teeth, or dental implants may be recommended to replace missing teeth. Dr. van Zyl will also evaluate the gums for any signs of periodontal disease and the jaw for TMJ disorder, which both require treatment. Dr. van Zyl may advise the patient to undergo orthodontic treatment as well.

Also referred to as “caps,” dental crowns serve two primary purposes: cosmetically enhancing the smile, and restoring strength and functionality to teeth that are decayed or damaged. Depending on your preference and needs, dental crowns can be made from gold, metal, or porcelain, which is currently the most popularly choice for a more natural appearance. The crown is customized to fit snuggly over the entire damaged tooth, and most of our crowns are completed in one visit using CEREC® technology. Once placed, the crown looks, functions, and feels just like the natural tooth.

Dental bridges are an option for patients with up to three missing teeth in a row. A bridge is made up of two dental crowns affixed to prosthetic teeth. The crowns fit snugly over the healthy, natural teeth, and the artificial teeth fill in the open space. Dental bridges restore the strength and functionality of the teeth, and help improve oral health. Additionally, the beauty of your smile is greatly enhanced by our high-quality, customized bridges.

Inlays and Onlays

If your molars are too badly damaged by decay for a dental filling, but not enough for a crown, dental inlays and onlays may be a good compromise. Created from impressions of your teeth, these restorations are designed to fit like puzzle pieces into the damaged part of your tooth for a comfortable and durable fit. Both inlays and onlays are made of tooth-colored resin, allowing them to blend in seamlessly with your smile.

Dental Bonding

Dental bonding is a fast and effective treatment for restoring minor damage to your teeth, including cracks, chips, discoloration, or imperfections in size or shape. During a short procedure, we will select a shade of bonding material that matches your tooth, apply it to the tooth, and then mold it into the desired shape. This treatment both strengthens your teeth long-term and eliminates cosmetic flaws for a more dazzling smile.
