A Root Canal  Can Prevent Tooth Loss

Gentle Treatment

Modern techniques have made root canal therapy much more gentle than in the past. Additionally, sedation is available to help you relax during treatment.

Prevent More Serious Issues

As an infection worsens, it can compromise your tooth, leading to tooth loss. It can also spread, affecting the surrounding tissues. A root canal can stop the spread of infection.

Avoid Extraction

Once an infection progresses past the point of treatment, your tooth will need to be removed to protect your oral health. However, a root canal can typically prevent the need for extraction.

It is a common misconception that root canal treatment is painful.

In fact, root canal therapy can relieve intense discomfort caused by an infection. Many patients compare the procedure to receiving a dental filling.

Root Canal

When a tooth becomes infected and has extensive nerve damage, a root canal is often necessary. Dr. Van Zyl performs this procedure at his practice, Ozark Comprehensive Dentistry. After a root canal has been performed, Dr. Van Zyl recommends that patients reinforce the structure of the affected tooth with a dental crown.

The Procedure

During root canal therapy, the treatment area will first be numbed with a local anesthetic. Some patients may opt for sedation, such as nitrous oxide, to help them relax and remain comfortable. Next, a small hole will be drilled through the outer surface of the tooth to access the inner chamber. Once the access hole is complete, the infected pulp and bacteria are removed and the area is filled with a rubbery substance called gutta-percha. The chamber is then sealed with dental filling to prevent further infection. The final step in a root canal treatment consists of placing a dental crown, which will strengthen and protect the weakened tooth.

Potential Risks

Risks associated with root canal therapy are very rare and include excessive bleeding, fracture of the tooth during drilling, and recurrence of the infection which necessitates retreatment. These risks can be significantly reduced by choosing a highly skilled dentist like Dr. van Zyl.
