Dental Cleanings

Despite the best oral hygiene routine, plaque and tartar will accumulate on the teeth and require professional treatment.

Dental cleanings provided by Dr. Ettienne van Zyl's team can remove buildup and ensure any conditions are diagnosed as soon as possible.

Why should you schedule routine cleanings?

Your Oral & Overall Health Both Benefit from Dental Cleanings

Decay & Gum Disease Prevention

By removing built-up plaque and tartar, our team can minimize your risk of conditions such as cavities and gum disease. This can have a far-reaching impact on your overall health over your lifetime.

Oral Hygiene Education

Without direction, it can be difficult to know whether your oral hygiene routine is sufficient. During your cleaning, the doctor can answer questions and provide guidance to improve your at-home regimen so you can maintain the healthiest smile.

Brighten & Freshen Your Smile

A thorough cleaning can remove stubborn stains, allowing you to leave with a brighter smile. Additionally, any lingering bacteria will be cleaned away, freshening your breath.

Cleanings are recommended at least every six months...

More Than Just a Cleaning

Most importantly, professional teeth cleanings are an opportunity to have dental professionals polish and thoroughly remove bacteria, plaque, and tartar from your teeth, especially in areas that are hard to reach with at-home care. Our team uses a gentle touch to ensure your comfort throughout treatment.

In addition to cleaning your teeth, Dr. van Zyl will also conduct an examination of your jaw to ensure that your bite is properly aligned. Your soft oral tissues will also be closely evaluated for any signs of health problems. In all, biannual check-ups are a very important way to screen for:

  • Gum disease: Also known as periodontitis, gum disease affects nearly half of all American adults. Gum disease is the leading cause of adult tooth loss nationwide, but it is highly treatable with early intervention. In a growing number of studies, gum disease has also been linked to an increased risk of developing diabetes, heart disease, and even Alzheimer’s disease. If Dr. van Zyl identifies gum disease, he can recommend one of several treatment options to restore the health of your gums.
  • Oral cancer: Sores, white spots, lesions, and other abnormalities of the soft tissues, including the lips, tongue, inner cheeks, palate, and throat, can be indicators of oral cancer. Although it is very treatable in its early stages, oral cancer has a relatively high mortality rate since it is often not detected and addressed until advanced stages are reached. Regular checkups with a dental professional are one of your most effective ways to guard yourself against this aggressive disease.
  • Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) Disorder: The muscles, tendons, and nerves that support jaw function have a tremendous effect on the health of your entire body. Patients with TMJ disorder - or strain on the TMJs, jaw, and related muscles - can have a series of surprising symptoms. Headaches, back and neck pain, and ringing in the ears are just some of the symptoms typical to TMJ disorder. As a dentist with advanced training, technology, and experience in treating the condition, Dr. van Zyl can accurately diagnose and effectively treat your TMJ disorder.

Checking Dental Work for Optimal Function

During your biannual cleaning and exam, Dr. van Zyl will also review your existing dental work for structural damage. Any wear, cracks, or chips can compromise the function of the teeth that the restorations are meant to protect and support. For patients with restoration replacement needs, Dr. van Zyl offers fillings and porcelain crowns and bridges of incredible quality. His restorations can blend in flawlessly with your natural teeth, providing strength and protection for your bite.
