More significantly, however, this condition can lead to oral health issues and increase the risk for decay, gum disease, and other problems. Fortunately, there are a variety of treatment options that can address this issue.

Here, our Memphis, TN dental team discusses treatment for a twisted tooth, focusing on the orthodontic and cosmetic dentistry options available at our office.

ClearCorrect™ Orthodontic Aligners

Patients who desire straighter teeth, but do not want to wear traditional braces, can benefit from orthodontic treatment with ClearCorrect. This revolutionary system gradually moves the teeth into their desired positions using a series of clear thermoplastic trays.

ClearCorrect is an excellent option for addressing twisted teeth, as most patients are eligible for this type of treatment.

During the treatment process, patients change out their current set of trays for the next set in the series approximately every two weeks. The subtle changes in the aligners will move the teeth into their new locations. All in all, this treatment takes about 18 to 24 months to complete.

Traditional Metal Braces

The specific treatment recommended for you will be dependent on your unique situation. Some twisted teeth will require traditional orthodontics, such as metal braces. This conventional option has been in use for decades and is still one of the most effective orthodontic appliances to date.

To straighten the teeth, metal bands, brackets, and wires are placed on the teeth. Steady, gentle pressure is applied to move the teeth gradually over time. Approximately every four to six weeks, patients will return to our office for adjustments.

In most cases, orthodontic treatment with braces can be completed in about 18 to 24 months. Of course, this timeline can vary depending on your specific situation.

Porcelain Veneers

Mild cases of twisted teeth may be correctable with porcelain veneers. These custom-made fabrications are designed to fit on the front surfaces of the teeth to conceal a variety of cosmetic imperfections, including chips, cracks, discoloration, gapping, and twisted teeth.

Porcelain veneers can be placed in about two office visits, offering a quick and dramatic result for patients with twisted teeth.

The Importance of Treating Twisted Teeth

There are several cosmetic and health-related reasons to correct twisted teeth. For example, treatment for a twisted tooth can:

  • Reduce the risk of decay and gum disease: When a tooth is twisted, it can make cleaning the area extremely challenging. Eliminating the overlap and correcting the bite can make it easier to brush and floss, making your at-home hygiene care even more effective.
  • Prevent uneven wear and tear: When one element of your smile is out of alignment, it can have a negative impact on your bite. A twisted tooth can cause the teeth to meet improperly, causing erosion and uneven wear. Correcting a twisted tooth eliminates this problem.
  • Alleviate orofacial pain: When the bite is out of alignment, even by a fraction, it can lead to orofacial pain and TMJ disorder. When the teeth are moved into more appropriate positions, the bite and jaw are in alignment, effectively reducing the amount of strain.
  • Enhance your smile: Of course, the most noticeable advantage of treating a twisted tooth is the impact it can have on your overall appearance.
