At van Zyl Center for Advanced Dentistry, we strive to improve the health and aesthetics of each patient’s smile in the most cost-effective and least invasive way possible. Many dental problems, including gaps between teeth, misshaped teeth, and discolored teeth can detract from a person’s self-confidence. One of the most cost-effective, yet aesthetically pleasing solutions to these common dental problems, among others, is dental bonding. Through dental bonding, we are able to restore beauty and function to the smiles of our Memphis restorative dentistry patients.

What Is Dental Bonding?

Simply stated, dental bonding is a cosmetic dentistry procedure used to improve the appearance of the smile by concealing dental imperfections. To prepare the teeth for the special tooth-colored resin bonding material, an etching solution is applied to the surfaces of the teeth. This creates a rough surface for the resin to bond to. Once the tooth-colored resin has been applied to the surfaces of the teeth, a high-intensity light is then used to cure the resin material. After this process has been completed, the bonded material is sculpted to fit the tooth and polished to match the sheen of the surrounding teeth.

Benefits of Dental Bonding

For our patients in Memphis, dental bonding offers a relatively inexpensive solution to many dental imperfections. One of the greatest benefits of dental bonding is its versatility. While dental bonding may not be as long-lasting and stain resistant as other dental treatments, such as porcelain veneers, it can be used to address a wide range of dental problems. Another benefit of dental bonding is that it does not require the use of a laboratory. Because of this, the dental bonding procedure can usually be completed during one dental visit. The dental bonding procedure typically takes 30 to 60 minutes to complete per treated tooth. The vast majority of patients do not require anesthesia when undergoing dental bonding as it is virtually painless. Another benefit of dental bonding is that very little of the tooth’s enamel is removed during the application process. As a result of this, the integrity of the treated tooth is maintained.

Dental Bonding Uses

Dental bonding may be used to address many common dental issues, as well to improve the appearance of teeth with dental flaws, including:

  • To protect the tooth’s root when gums have receded
  • To make teeth appear longer
  • To improve the appearance of discolored teeth
  • To repair chipped or cracked teeth
  • To change the shape of teeth
  • To close gaps between teeth
  • As a cosmetic alternative to amalgam fillings
