When the teeth are slightly misaligned, orthodontics may not be necessary. Perhaps porcelain veneers would do the job nicely if the gaps between teeth are small and the crookedness only mild.

But in some cases, the teeth are too crowded or severely misaligned for any treatment but orthodontics. Dental braces are a reliable and time-tested way to correct misalignment, and they can also correct any kind of malocclusion – faulty bites – such as an overbite or underbite.

How do Braces Work?
Over a period of time, braces exert gentle pressure on the teeth, according to your pre-determined treatment plan. Gradually they move them into correct positions. Braces are adjusted regularly, so as to exert appropriate pressures as the teeth begin to move. Some teeth may need to move further than others. Some may need to change their angle more than others. Your treatment plan accounts for all these subtleties so that overall, the teeth move into good relationships with each other and give you a straight and even smile.

Braces also cause the jawbone to change and remodel itself, and they relieve stress on the jaw joints (temporomandibular joints). They are sometimes used as part of treatment for Temporomandibular Joint Disorder (TMD).

Teeth can be re-aligned at any stage of life, but the best age for it is between three and twelve. A child is still developing, which makes it easier to mold the jawbone. By catching misalignment early, the entire facial profile can be improved, and will remain stable throughout life.

Braces Components
Braces combine brackets which are bonded to each tooth, and arch wires which are threaded through the brackets. The arch wire applies tension, the pressure to move teeth.

We offer braces with stainless steel, gold-plated, and ceramic brackets.

  • Stainless steel is very practical and most often used.
  • Ceramic brackets are tooth-colored, and therefore less visible. They are translucent, allowing light to pass through them to the tooth, and they reduce the metallic appearance of your smile.
  • For some, gold-plated brackets make something of a fashion statement.

Dr. Van Zyl will discuss the types of brackets with you and together you can determine which would be best for you.
