The symptoms of TMD are diverse, ephemeral, and hard to pinpoint. Only a trained neuromuscular dentist can properly Diagnose TMD, and many of the complaints associated with TMD are misdiagnosed as many other illnesses and conditions. However, if you have some combination of the following symptoms, you may have TMD:
- Headaches / migraines are the most common symptom
- General facial pain, especially around the eyes, ears, and mouth
- Neck and shoulder pain
- Ringing in the ears
- Sensitive or sore teeth not traceable to decay
- Jaw pain especially associated with chewing or talking
- Numbness or tingling in the arms, hands, or other extremities
- Jaw grating, clicking, or popping
- Ear ache without an infection
- Limited jaw movement, including jaw locking or pain
Only a qualified medical professional can properly diagnose TMD. The above symptoms manifest themselves in a variety of ways and combinations, and are often difficult to identify.
