Cosmetic dentistry is both a science and an art. The dentist has studied the scientific knowledge pertinent to the mouth, from the morphology (structure) and musculature to the dental dynamics and statics of teeth and jaws. However, when it comes to making your mouth look good, it requires someone with a sense of balance, proportion, and color, someone sensitive to your cosmetic goals and able to make them a reality.

You want a dentist who specializes in cosmetic dentistry, who has the training, experience, and talent to provide good cosmetic results. Not all dentists are trained in cosmetic dentistry, whether or not they call themselves cosmetic dentists. The American Dental Association (ADA) does not issue special certifications or licenses indicating which dentists are cosmetic dentists and which are not. The ADA certifies only that a dentist has the skill to address the medical side of dentistry, so it’s likely that the dentist you go to for twice yearly check-ups is probably not up to the task of a full-fledged cosmetic restoration.

You can, however, find a highly-trained cosmetic dentist in your area. To prepare themselves for the additional challenge of cosmetic treatment, some dentists obtain additional training and certification from cosmetic dentistry organizations and universities. These organizations include: the Las Vegas Institute for Advanced Dental Studies, the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry (AACD), PAC-Live or the America Society of Dental Aesthetics (ASDA).

There are four initial steps to take to find a cosmetic dentist with the skill, training, and experience to give you the results you desire:

1) Ask friends and family for references.

2) Talk to your dentist and/or doctor to see if there is a cosmetic dentist he/she recommends. Often, cosmetic dentists and general dentists are not in competition with one another and are happy to refer patients to one another.

3) Check with cosmetic dentistry organizations:

4) Refer to directories, commercials, web sites and other advertising. Weigh the information you receive in the order listed here. Personal recommendations by people you know who have had a good experience with a dentist should be given the greatest weight, whereas directories and commercials should be viewed with skepticism.

Once you’ve found a cosmetic dentist you think is adequately qualified, you should:

1) Verify the dentist’s license with your state’s dental board.

2) Check with the clerk of the county or circuit court to see if any medical malpractice suits have been filed against your dentist. Although some fraudulent suits are brought against good dentists, consider multiple judgments against a doctor to be a warning sign.

3) Verify credentials and training. Not only should the dentist have training in advanced cosmetic dental techniques, but should show a desire to remain current with recent advances through research and/or ongoing training.

4) Make sure your dentist is a specialist.

5) Ask your dentist how many times he has performed the procedure you're having.

6) Ask the dentist for references.

Pay attention not only to the actual answers, but the dentist’s manner as he or she answers. If you feel uncomfortable, it's probably best if you continue your search for the right cosmetic dentist.
