A dental bridge is a good restoration to replace a missing tooth or teeth. Not as invasive as a dental implant, but more permanent and effective than dentures. A dental bridge is method of fastening a false tooth—also called a pontic—permanently in place. This is done by one of three methods. Normally, the pontic is attached to crowns placed on teeth on either side of the gap. This is especially good in situations when the neighboring teeth are in need of restoration as well. If the missing tooth is at the rear of the mouth, you may receive what is known as a cantilevered bridge, which is anchored on only one side. Finally, your dentist may recommend that your bridge be bonded directly to the neighboring teeth instead of to crowns. This may be done in situations where the neighboring teeth are in especially good shape.
Dental bridges are not removable, as are dentures. This means that they function largely the way natural teeth function, giving better chewing and aesthetic results than dentures, and should be cared for using the same oral hygiene techniques used for your natural teeth.
