Dental bonding is one of the most cost effective cosmetic dental procedures around. It can be used to correct a wide variety of tooth problems, including cracks, decay, chips, gaps, and tooth discoloration. Almost all minor dental problems can be at least helped by dental bonding, although the quality of the restoration may not be as good as that offered by porcelain veneers or porcelain fillings.
Dental bonding is an advanced composite resin which is applied to your teeth. Initially, it’s analogous to putty. It is applied to your teeth – filling in gaps, covering up cracks, etc. – and then the resin is hardened with a special light. Because during the bonding process your dentist is essentially sculpting your teeth as you sit there, dental bonding requires a good hand to get quality results.
One of the advantages of the dental bonding process is that it does not require that a mold be made and sent away to the lab. Bonding is typically done in only one office visit. It’s painless, quick, and relatively inexpensive, but because the restoration is not crafted in a lab from impressions, and because bonding is not as durable as porcelain, the quality and durability of the restoration are not as great as porcelain restoration. This makes bonding best suited for small cosmetic changes.
